Am I the Only One Left?

An experimental digital collage born from a charcoal portrait I absolutely hated and chose to destroy through the scanner. National Fine Arts Award Winner (GYIMT 2024).

Am I the Only One Left? began with a charcoal portrait I thoroughly detested. Instead of throwing it away, I decided to deconstruct it completely. I placed it on the flatbed scanner and physically dragged it across the glass while it scanned, shattering the original image into distorted light and shadow.

Next, I smeared a sheet of frosted glass, placed it over the scanner, and captured scans of my own face through this dirty, hazy barrier. In Photoshop, I digitally collaged these raw, distorted textures into the final composition—which took the shape of a rabbit. Born from a piece I initially couldn't stand, the artwork ultimately became a symbolic reflection on vulnerability and survival.
